Badrinath Dham, one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand, has officially closed its doors for the winter season. The sacred shrine, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, concluded its rituals and shut its gates on November 17 at 9:07 PM, marking the end of the 2024 pilgrimage season.
The closing ceremony was conducted with deep reverence and rich tradition. Hundreds of devotees gathered to witness the event, which signifies the temple’s transition into its winter hibernation. The rituals involved elaborate offerings and Vedic recitations, symbolizing gratitude and devotion to Lord Vishnu before the temple remains inaccessible during the harsh winter months.
On November 15, the Vedic chants ceased as the Veda Upanishads were ceremoniously handed over to the temple’s Rawal (chief priest) and Dharmadhikari (religious leader). This moment marked the beginning of the final rituals leading to the shrine’s closure.
During the winter, the idol of Lord Badrinath will be moved to Narsingh Temple in Joshimath, where devotees can continue their prayers until the temple reopens in spring 2025. The tradition reflects the enduring faith and devotion of pilgrims who follow these sacred rituals year after year.
Badrinath Dham will welcome pilgrims again after the snow melts, with the exact date of reopening to be announced closer to the season. For now, the temple rests, awaiting the warmth of spring to reopen its doors to countless devotees.
